Jon Dahl Tomasson has been sacked as Sweden manager after Tuesday’s humiliating 1-0 home loss to Kosovo.
Tomasson became the country’s first foreign manager when he took over in February last year, but he managed to win just nine of his 18 games in charge.
Premier League stars Viktor Gyokeres and Alexander Isak were expected to step up for their country in yesterday’s crucial home game, but the pair disappointed with their performance.
Tomasson launched a stinging attack on the two strikers following the defeat.
He said (per the Mirror): “It’s not good enough and it’s a terrible result. It really hurts, we forgot how to score goals, and I don’t know why.”
But the Swedish Football Association clearly believe the fault lies with the Danish boss, as they announced his dismissal on Tuesday.
However, their decision to appoint him was questionable given that he had failed in his previous role at Blackburn Rovers.
The latest defeat in Gothenburg means Sweden’s hopes of reaching the 2026 World Cup finals are all but over.
They are bottom of their qualifying group after collecting just one point from four matches.
Tuesday’s home clash with Kosovo was a must-win for them, but their star players failed to shine.
Sweden mustered just four shots on target and committed 16 fouls. They had 12 corners but failed to score on an embarrassing night.
