Switzerland will face Argentina in the final quarter-final of the World Cup this Sunday at Kansas City Stadium.
Switzerland have impressed with their organisation and resilience, remaining unbeaten in normal time throughout the competition. They began Group B with a 1-1 draw against Qatar, then built momentum with a high-scoring 4-4 result against Bosnia and a 2-1 win over Canada to advance comfortably.
In the knockout rounds, they defeated Algeria 2-0 before playing out a goalless draw against Colombia over 120 minutes. Switzerland eventually progressed by winning 4-3 on penalties.
Midfielder Johan Manzambi has been ruled out after failing a late fitness test due to serious knee pain. The 20-year-old Freiburg player had been a key attacking outlet, scoring three important goals during the group stage.
There is some positive news for Switzerland, as winger Ruben Vargas is now fully fit and ready to start after featuring from the bench in the shootout win over Colombia. Michel Aebischer is also available for selection after recovering from his knock.
The Swiss will rely on their strong defensive setup and experienced core to challenge Argentina. Goalkeeper Gregor Kobel will start behind a defence led by Manuel Akanji, while captain Granit Xhaka and Remo Freuler will be crucial in midfield.
Possible Switzerland starting XI: Kobel; Zakaria, Elvedi, Akanji, Rodriguez; Jashari, Xhaka, Freuler; Ndoye, Embolo, Vargas
The match will kick off at 2am BST on Sunday, 12th July.
