Switzerland face Colombia at BC Place in Vancouver on Tuesday in the World Cup last 16, looking to reach the quarter-finals for the first time since 1954.
Murat Yakin’s side have been one of the group stage’s most improved sides and beat Algeria 2–0 in the last 32 to reach this stage. Colombia, unbeaten in five World Cup matches, provide the sternest test yet.
Murat Yakin faces a significant injury concern ahead of kick-off. Johan Manzambi, Rubén Vargas and Djibril Sow all left training early on Monday, with Switzerland providing no specific details on the nature of their issues.
Yakin told reporters the trio would undergo medical examinations on Monday afternoon. “If they might not play tomorrow, it can be a huge issue for us,” he said. Michel Aebischer has also been training individually with a muscle injury, while Luca Jaquez has a hip problem. A final decision on all five is expected closer to kick-off.
If Manzambi is fit he starts. The 20-year-old Freiburg midfielder has three goals and two assists at this tournament — the youngest player to register five World Cup goal involvements since records began. Breel Embolo of Rennes leads the line with four tournament goals. Granit Xhaka of Sunderland and Remo Freuler of Bologna anchor the midfield double pivot.
Should Manzambi or Vargas be unavailable, Christian Fassnacht or Fabian Rieder of Augsburg are the likeliest replacements. Gregor Kobel of Borussia Dortmund continues in goal behind a back four of Denis Zakaria, Nico Elvedi, Manuel Akanji and Ricardo Rodríguez.
Switzerland possible starting XI (4-2-3-1): Kobel; Zakaria, Elvedi, Akanji, Rodriguez; Xhaka, Freuler; Ndoye, Manzambi, Vargas; Embolo
The match will be broadcast live on ITV1 and ITVX in the UK.
