In the 23rd minute, Mark Sykes rifled from outside the box into the bottom-left corner after Adam Davies was caught out.

After the restart, Radek Vítek made key saves to thwart Gustavo Hamer and Patrick Bamford as the Blades pressed for a leveller. The City goalkeeper finished with seven stops in a standout display.

Half-time changes lifted the visitors' threat, with Andre Brooks and Hamer injected to good effect as Mark McGuinness twice tested Vítek from dangerous deliveries.

Lengthy treatment for Femi Seriki and later Vítek led to extended interruptions, and eight minutes of second half stoppage time were indicated before City saw it out.

City registered five attempts with one on target, making their big moment count. The Blades produced 21 attempts and five corners but could not find a way past Vítek.

The Blades remain 17th. Next, City visit Queens Park Rangers. The Blades host Hull.
