Serge Gnabry is back in the spotlight at FC Bayern. The 30-year-old has now officially confirmed for the first time that contract talks with the record champions have begun. While Munich are looking to extend Dayot Upamecano’s contract, an important decision could also be imminent for Gnabry – albeit under different circumstances
While the discussion surrounding Dayot Upamecano has recently taken up a large part of the public eye, things have remained surprisingly quiet around Serge Gnabry. Now it is clear that things are moving behind the scenes. „There are ongoing talks, we’ll see what happens,“ explained the attacking player ahead of the Champions League match against Sporting Lisbon
Gnabry also made it clear that he does not see his future as a burden: „The situation is very relaxed. I am completely relaxed, so far everything is fine from both sides.“

Gnabry’s overall development this season certainly plays into the club’s hands. Under Vincent Kompany, the 30-year-old has rediscovered his role, impressing with his fitness, stability and efficiency. As he remains largely injury-free, unlike in previous years, his standing in the team has strengthened again
According to consistent media reports, FC Bayern is generally positive about an extension. A new contract until 2028, i.e. two more years, is being considered. However, there is one key condition for this: a significant reduction in his salary
Gnabry is one of the top earners in the squad, reportedly earning €17-18 million per year, and those responsible want to streamline this structure in future – a point that the player would have to accept in order to remain in Munich
It is by no means impossible that an agreement will not be reached. If Gnabry were to leave the German record champions as a free agent, he would be extremely sought-after on the market. According to several reports, there are a number of top clubs abroad in particular who are looking closely at him
For Bayern, a free transfer would be bitter from a sporting and economic point of view, but the development also shows that the club is thinking more strategically and long-term, especially when it comes to players who exceed the salary range
The coming weeks could be decisive. Gnabry knows that he is once again valuable in sporting terms – and Bayern knows that the attacking midfielder continues to represent real added value for Vincent Kompany’s team in this form. However, the new contract depends on economic factors, not just performance
Both sides are open to further cooperation, but the record champions have set clear limits. Whether Gnabry is prepared to go down this path will decide whether he continues his Bayern story or starts a new chapter in the summer.
