Lazio return from Sardinia with three precious points in the back after besting Cagliari by two goals to one.
Marco Baroni went for his strongest available lineup, as Taty Castellanos started in attack supported by Gustav Isaksen, Boulaye Dia and Mattia Zaccagni, while Nicolo Rovella and Matteo Guendouzi combined in the double pivot.
The first half was a relatively dull affair with few opportunities on either side. Dia thought he had given the Biancocelesti the lead when struck by Yerry Mina’s clearance, but the goal didn’t stand as the ball hit the Senegalese’s hand.
Nevertheless, Lazio managed to score for real shortly before half-time. Isaksen combined well with Elseid Hysaj on the right flank and the latter sent a square ball towards the box. Dia couldn’t connect with the ball, but Zaccagni was there to place it beyond Elia Caprile.
The Isolani entered the second half with a renewed determination, and came close to equalizing through Nadir Zortea and then Michel Adopo. Cagliari’s onslaught paid off in the 55th minute when Nicolas Viola’s corner kick found Roberto Piccoli at the back post. The striker’s towering header had enough power and precision to beat Ivan Provedel.
Lazio almost replied instantly, but Castellanos and Romagnoli were both denied by Caprile. However, the visitors managed to retake the deal in the 64th minute thanks to Castellanos.
Boulaye Dia headed back the ball from the byline towards Zaccagni who couldn’t connect well with the ball, but had at least managed to draw Caprile off the line, so the Argentine bomber was easily able to place the shot inside the empty goal.
In the final 20 minutes, both sides had their chances, with Lazio coming particularly close to adding a third, but Zaccagni and Isaksen were both denied by excellent Caprile saves. Nevertheless, the Aquile had done enough to escape the island with a precious victory that puts them back in fourth place.
