Telstar are defying the odds in the Eredivisie this season. On Sunday the side provided another shock, this time beating league leaders PSV 3-1 to deny them the chance to celebrate the league title. PSV will certainly win the Eredivisie, but in denying them the chance to celebrate, Telstar gave their unlikely survival chances a huge boost. After promotion from the Eerste Divisie last season, many expected Telstar to be guaranteed a bottom two finish. However, their victory over PSV was the sixth of the season for the club and means they are currently in 14th place in the Eredivisie, four points above NAC Breda in 17th.
Should Telstar be able to avoid relegation from the Eredivisie this season, head coach Anthony Correia is surely the frontrunner for manager of the season. Dick Schreuder may fell hard done by if that were to be the case, given how well his NEC Nijmegen side have played this season. Yet, what Correia has done with the tools at his disposal is impressive. The side lost their star striker Youssef El Kachati to NEC in the summer, with the striker having scored 25 goals on the way to promotion last time out.
In his place, the side looked to the amateur divisions. They have plucked El Kachati from Quick Boys back in 2023, and they returned to the same club for his replacement. 25-year-old Patrick Brouwer scored 17 goals for Quick Boys during the 2024/2025 campaign, earning him a chance to step up to the Eredivisie. So far he has scored seven league goals, joint most for Telstar alongside Jochem Ritmeester van de Kamp, who is on loan at the club from Almere City. The loanee’s seasons is equally impressive given he failed to score a single goal for Almere City in 27 games in the Eredivisie last season. At the other end, Ronald Koeman, son of the Oranje head coach, has been equally impressive in goal.
With just six games to go, Telstar have their fate in their own hands. Correia just has to mastermind another few victories and that could be enough go keep Telstar in the Eredivisie. Their final two games, against Heracles and Volendam, may well be key in their survival.
