Walsall assistant Terry Connor is taking a short break from his duties, with former Birmingham City player Michael Johnson stepping in alongside interim head coach Darren Byfield.

The club said in a statement that Connor will be away for a short period before returning to the dugout, and that Johnson links up with the staff immediately. He will be in the dugout when Walsall host Gillingham on Good Friday.

Connor, 61, replaced Gary Waddock as assistant head coach last month after Waddock left to manage National League side Wealdstone. He had earlier served as interim assistant while Waddock underwent ankle surgery.

Johnson made 262 appearances in eight years at Birmingham City, scoring 12 goals and reaching the 2001 League Cup final. He also played for Derby County, Notts County and Sheffield Wednesday, and won 13 caps for Jamaica.

The 52-year-old, a former international team-mate of Byfield, later moved into coaching. He managed Guyana, had a brief caretaker spell at Notts County in 2009 and worked in the club’s academy for several seasons. More recently he has held roles with Cardiff City under-21s and within the FA across the English youth set-up.
