Erling Haaland has further hit out at his Manchester City teammates for the standard of performance during the second-half of their 2-2 draw away to AS Monaco this week.
The Norwegian striker may have extended his sensational Champions League scoring record with a first-half brace, but his comments post-match reflected frustration rather than celebration.
City appeared to be in control for large periods, yet a lapse in focus during the latter stages of the contest meant they left France with only a point. For Haaland, who has repeatedly spoken of his desire to see the club return to Europe’s summit, such shortcomings are unacceptable.
Manchester City had travelled to Monaco well aware of the hosts’ absences, with Adi Hütter confirming an eight-man injury and suspension list before kick-off, but despite that advantage, the Premier League giants were unable to fully capitalise.
Jordan Teze’s thunderbolt cancelled out Haaland’s opener before the Norwegian nodded home Nico O’Reilly’s cross to restore the lead before half-time. Yet Eric Dier’s last-minute penalty – awarded after Nico was penalised for a reckless challenge – ensured the points were shared.
For Pep Guardiola’s side, the result was a reminder of last season’s frustrations, and Haaland made clear his awareness of the dangers of history repeating itself.
Speaking during a post-match interview with TNT Sports Brazil’s Fred Caldeira, Erling Haaland has insisted upon his unhappiness at City’s performance during the 2-2 draw with AS Monaco and particularly the second-half decline in standard of showing in France.
“We didn’t play good enough. We can do better than this and that’s why I’m upset because in the first half we dominated much more but not so well which is not good enough. That doesn’t make me happy,” said the Norwegian, as translated and relayed by Sport Witness.
The 25-year-old continued, “During the 2nd half I don’t think we controlled the game as much as in the first half. We played amazing football. But during the 2nd half we made too many stupid mistakes and we didn’t create enough.
“Monaco are a strong team. It wasn’t easy but we had the chances. We didn’t take them.”
Haaland has also seemingly learned from Manchester City’s experiences in the competition last season, when the club exited the tournament before the last-16 stage for the first time since the 2012/13 season.
“You can’t lose too many points like these. We know this,” Haaland insisted. “We have it in the back of our heads that you cannot start losing in the Champions League because. Because [there are] strong teams in every single game and it is difficult.”
Looking ahead, Pep Guardiola will likely face growing pressure to sharpen Manchester City’s European edge, and while Haaland’s goals remain a defining weapon, the team’s reliance on moments of individual brilliance leaves them vulnerable when defensive lapses occur.
The draw extends Manchester City’s unbeaten run to six games across competitions, yet their Champions League campaign risks being undermined if they cannot turn dominance into victories starting from their next match in the tournament away to Villarreal.
Much may also depend on how younger and new players like Nico O’Reilly and Tijjani Reijnders respectively continue to integrate. O’Reilly’s assist in Monaco highlighted his potential, but consistency will be key if City are to avoid repeating the pitfalls of last season.
Meanwhile, with Erling Haaland demanding higher standards and Pep Guardiola entering another crucial Champions League campaign, all eyes will be on how the squad responds in their next European outing.
