Harry Kane is currently producing a firework of goals that is extraordinary even by his standards. In FC Bayern’s 2:1 victory over Borussia Dortmund, the English superstar once again showed that he has long been more than just a classic centre-forward – and also amazed his coach.
After the success in the Bundesliga top match, Vincent Kompany had nothing but superlatives for his exceptional striker. „Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo have scored so many goals that you think it’s normal – but over 400 goals is crazy and insane,“ the Bayern coach enthused on Sky.
He was particularly impressed not only by Kane’s strike rate, but also by the way the Englishman characterised the game: „What he did today: Harry also worked a lot for us at the back today and was a very important player for us.“
Kane epitomised the balance between world class and hard work against Dortmund. His performance ranged from precise passing and dribbling to defensive tackles and his 22nd goal of the season – in just eleven competitive games. With this goal, he also scored his 400th competitive goal at club level, spread over five clubs. He also scored 76 goals for the England national team. Figures that impress even in the era of Messi and Ronaldo.
By comparison, Cristiano Ronaldo has scored over 800 goals and Lionel Messi around 780 at club level. Even if the two superstars are still out of reach, the England captain’s value to Munich is undoubtedly comparable at the moment.
Kompany was impressed, but also calm. He knows what he has in his goalscorer – and lets him have his way. „Harry has a great feel for the position. Maybe in his head it’s my decision where he stands – but I go completely with what he shows,“ explained the coach, adding: „Why should I stop that? I could if I felt he was too far away from goal. It’s important to trust your players.“
With eleven wins from eleven competitive matches to start the season, FC Bayern is on course under Kompany. And that is not least due to a man who can only surpass himself at the moment.
