FLW’s Plymouth Argyle fan pundit has discussed how good the atmosphere is at Home Park.
This article is part of Football League World's 'Terrace Talk' series, which provides personal opinions from our FLW Fan Pundits regarding the latest breaking news, teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…
Plymouth Argyle have had quite a mixed start on their return to League One.
Led by Tom Cleverley, the Pilgrims currently sit 16th in the third-tier, winning four and losing six of their opening 10 league matches.
The former Watford boss will be hopeful that three victories from their last four games can transform their fortunes though, with the Devonshire outfit needing to show much more consistency if they want to be in contention to return to the Championship at the first time of asking.
Plymouth’s run, which has included a 4-0 win away at Burton Albion last weekend, is hopefully a catalyst for getting the club back on the right track and can see them go on an upwards trajectory between now and next May.
So far this term, Plymouth’s home form has been poor, with the club suffering three defeats and recording just two victories, an area which simply has to improve between now and the end of the season.
However, Home Park is well-known for generating an exciting atmosphere, with the crowd so influential in the Pilgrims’ rally towards Championship survival last term – albeit they still suffered relegation back down to the third-tier.
With this in mind, FLW’s Plymouth Argyle fan pundit has issued his thoughts on the atmosphere at Home Park and how it ranks compared to the rest of the English game.
Speaking to Football League World, Plymouth Argyle fan pundit Luke Hodge believes Home Park generates an “electric” atmosphere, which is particularly impressive given their stadium is at a lower capacity compared to others in the EFL pyramid.
Luke said: “I think Home Park has an excellent atmosphere.
“That’s not me being biased or having my green tinted glasses on. I think fans that have come down have always said that Home Park is one of the best grounds they’ve come down to in terms of atmosphere.
“Don’t get me wrong, it can be flat at times, like every ground can be, but when you’ve got the team playing well under the lights on a Tuesday or Wednesday night, then the place is bouncing, it really does spur the players on, lifting them up a level or two.
“So, in general, Home Park, in comparison to other clubs, has an excellent atmosphere, given its size as well. The capacity is around 17,000, but as I said, on a Tuesday or Wednesday night, under the lights, the team are playing well, and it’s a decent game, then the crowd is bouncing, and the place is electric.”
As mentioned above, Plymouth Argyle’s record at home so far in League One has been disappointing and rather surprising given how strong they were at Home Park in the second-tier last season.
When the team is playing well with confidence, the crowd feeds off of that and can provide that extra gear at times when needed most, so the players need to give the supporters something to shout about by digging out some positive results.
If they can do that, then the stadium will be back to being lively and a tough place to go for opposition teams, something that has to be a must for any side looking to be in the promotion conversation.
If Argyle can turn around their home form and match it with their record on their travels, then it will undoubtedly be a recipe for success and see them climb up the table in no time.
That has to be the aim now, with the club not wanting to be too far back from the chasing pack in the coming weeks and months.
