“That’s why he’s here” – Chelsea loanee draws rave reviews after latest impressive performance | OneFootball

Liam Rosenior has praised Djordje Petrovic for his performance for Strasbourg in their victory against Auxerre labelling him a “great goalkeeper.”

Chelsea signed Petrovic from MLS side New England Revolution in the summer of 2023 in a deal worth £14m, and he impressed under Mauricio Pochettino last season.

The 25-year-old had to bide his time, but when he replaced the injured Robert Sanchez in December 2023 he grabbed his opportunity with both hands.

The Serbian international made 31 appearances in all competitions last season, with 23 of those coming in the Premier League as the Blues secured a top six finish and a return to European football.

However, despite impressing and many fans thinking he should be the club’s number one the decision was taken to stick to with Robert Sanchez, whilst Filip Jorgensen was signed from Villarreal.

Petrovic impressed for Chelsea last season.

This left Petrovic surplus to requirements after just one season and he was sent on loan to sister side Strasburg in Ligue 1, a move he insisted he’s happy with.

Strasbourg sit tenth in the league after an important 3-1 win against Auxerre on Sunday and Petrovic has been quietly impressing in France, with the keeper drawing praise from Rosenior after his latest performance.

“Petrovic is a great goalkeeper, that’s why he’s here,” he said as cited on X.com.

“We expect him in these kinds of matches, the fans pay their way to see these kinds of saves. He was decisive again today.”

Petrovic has made 13 appearances this season and has kept three cleans sheets, with Chelsea likely to be pleased with his progress.

Quite what their plan is for the Serbian moving forward is unclear although he believes he does still have a future at Stamford Bridge.

All Petrovic can do is keep impressing at Strasbourg, but it feels like his future lies away from Chelsea and he will be on the move in the summer which would be a shame given his qualities.
