Two players do not automatically qualify for a medal
For the first time in over two decades, Arsenal players can now call themselves Premier League champions.
Manchester City’s failure last night to beat Bournemouth on the south coast sparked jubilant scenes in north London, as fans descended on the Emirates Stadium as players and club staff celebrated wildly at the training ground in London Colney.
There is still one more game to play of the Premier League season, and the Gunners players will be welcomed onto the pitch at Crystal Palace with a guard of honour, before captain Martin Odegaard lifts the Premier League trophy after the game.
Arsenal players will get a winners’ medal to take home with them, but not necessarily all of them.
Rule C.13 in the Premier League Handbook states the Gunners “will receive 40 commemorative medals, which are made of silver and are 2.25in (5.7cm) in diameter.
“These are to be presented by the Club to its Manager and to such of its Players and Officials as it thinks fit provided that any Player who has entered the field of play in a minimum of five of its League Matches that Season shall receive from the Club a commemorative medal."
"Additional medals may only be presented with the consent of the Board which shall only be given if the total number of Players who have entered the field of play that Season in a minimum of five of the Club’s League Matches exceeds 39."
Heading into the final game of the season, 24 Arsenal players - including Ethan Nwaneri now on loan at Marseille - have played five or more times for the club in the Premier League this season so will automatically be presented with a medal.
However, second-choice goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga and third-choice goalkeeper Tommy Setford have not played in the Premier League at all this season.
All 11 of Kepa’s appearances this season have come in cup competitions, while Setford has one game under his belt in the FA Cup.
With just one game remaining, there is no chance of either hitting the winners’ medal threshold.
Though, with 16 medals going spare, there is every chance Kepa and Setford get one apiece this weekend.
