We set off in two groups today for the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup! While some of our players flew to Newark from Salzburg via Frankfurt, the rest of the group took a bus to Munich to fly straight from there to the New York area.
Our first-ever club journey across continents is a very special one, of course, as never before has there been such a massive tournament with 32 teams taking part. This evening (with six hours' time difference), our boys will check in to the team's headquarters in Morristown (New Jersey), and tomorrow our boys are to complete two public training sessions at the training centre of the New York Red Bulls.
Among our squad of 28 players for the club World Cup are new signings Sota Kitano (from Cerezo Osaka), Frans Krätzig (Bayern Munich), Stefan Lainer (Borussia Mönchengladbach) and Jacob Rasmussen (Bröndby) as well as Soumaila Diabate and Jonas Krumrey (recently on loan to FC Blau-Weiß Linz and Lyngby BK). Also in the squad are youngsters Enrique Aguilar, Jannik Schuster and Christian Zawieschitzky, who mostly played for FC Liefering in the 2024/25 season. One of the four goalkeepers in the squad is Alexander Schlager, who is continuing to suffer from a wrist injury and is a doubt for the tournament in the USA.
We are ahead of something that has never happened before. We are therefore looking forward to it immensely. As we had to start up again just two-and-a half weeks after the end of the league season, we have had to plan a lot of things carefully. One big aim was that we would be able to complete new signings and integrate them into the team. We won't be going out to say we want to win the tournament. That would be foolhardy. We are professional sportspeople though and always want to win matches. We want to do that at the Club World Cup too.
Rouven Schröder, CEO for Sport
We are looking forward so much to the Club World Cup and want to show our best side so that everyone says we deserve to be there. It is difficult to set specific goals, but we definitely want to do the best we can. I hadn't expected that things would go so quickly and we have four new signings and a few young players with us too. That is fantastic and has to help. It's a kind of new start.
Thomas Letsch, Head Coach
