FLW takes a look at a couple of Charlton Athletic players who could soon depart.
Charlton Athletic have made an underwhelming start to the season in League One meaning that Nathan Jones may already be looking ahead to the January transfer window.
The Addicks have failed to reach the play-offs in any of the seasons since they were relegated from the Championship in 2020, and they will have their work cut out if they are going to make the top six in the third tier this time around.
They made an encouraging start to the campaign, having taken maximum points from their opening three league games, although they have since dropped down the table, and found themselves in the bottom half during the international break.
Jones will know that he needs to improve the form of his side if he is going to make something of his first full season in the dugout at The Valley, and the January transfer window will give him an opportunity to strengthen his squad, especially considering that a few of his key players are unavailable through injury.
The upcoming transfer window will also provide an opportunity for a few of Charlton's fringe players to be moved on, which could make it easier for new signings to be brought to the club. Let's take a look at a couple of players who could leave SE7 in a couple of months' time.
Left-back Tayo Edun has been stuck behind Josh Edwards and Thierry Small in the pecking order so far this season, with his opportunities mostly arriving in cup competitions.
After joining the Addicks from Blackburn Rovers in the summer of 2023, Edun played 26 league games last season, although his game-time became more limited following the appointment of Jones in February.
The former Lincoln City man has shown that he is capable of performing in the third tier during his career, so he is unlikely to be content with his current lack of minutes, meaning that an exit in January would come as no surprise.
His contract is due to expire next summer, and it seems unlikely that Charlton will trigger their option to extend it, making it even more likely that they will part company with the defender in two months' time.
Dan Potts signed for Charlton on a short-term deal earlier this season, linking back up with his old boss Jones, although the move has not really worked out.
The 30-year-old has struggled with injuries since his arrival at The Valley, so his appearances have been limited during his time with the Addicks.
Considering his fitness record, and the fact that Jones may need to reduce the wage bill in order to bring in new signings, it seems probable that Potts will depart when his contract expires at the end of the year.
It is unfortunate that Charlton supporters have not been able to see the best of Potts, who helped Luton Town win promotion to the Premier League during the 2022/23 season, but injury problems have hampered him in recent seasons, so it looks like he may not get the chance to prove himself in South London.
