FC Bayern Women have a very special home game against SC Freiburg coming up on Sunday afternoon (14:00 CEST). A victory in the clash against the club from the Breisgau region would not only give the Munich side their 17th win in their 20th Bundesliga outing this season, but would also see them celebrate their third consecutive German championship. Read on to find out what speaks in favour of head coach Alexander Straus' team coming out on top on Sunday and which SCF players the Munich side should pay particular attention to in our facts on the match.
It's a run to be proud of! FC Bayern Women are unbeaten in the Bundesliga in 13 encounters with SC Freiburg and in that time have racked up an impressive 11 wins and two draws. The last defeat to the Breisgau club was a 2-0 loss in 2018. Since then, the reigning German champions have been extremely impressive, especially in Munich: captain Glódís Viggósdóttir and her team have won all of their last six games in front of their home crowd. The goal difference of 22:2 also clearly reflects FCB's dominance.
In the most recent home game against Freiburg, FCB Women were in impressive form and thrashed the visitors 4-0.
Ten games, ten wins - 30 points. That's how Straus' side's current Bundesliga run stacks up. However, the last team to take points off Bayern in the German top flight were of all teams SCF. Head coach Theresa Merk's side were even 2-0 up at one point in the 2-2 draw in the Hinrunde before FCB women rescued a point thanks to goals from Alara Şehitler and Weronika Zawistowksa. So Bayern have been warned, especially as the DFB Cup round of 16 (2-1 win) was also a close-run affair.
Moreover, Freiburg have recently picked up points against teams from the upper third of the table. The fifth-placed side put in an extremely strong performance against both VfL Wolfsburg (1-1) and Eintracht Frankfurt (3-2). Bayern should keep an eye on Freiburg's Cora Zicai. The 20-year-old has already racked up eight goals this season, making her the most prolific scorer in Merk's team.
With three matchdays to go in the campaign, Bayern are eight points ahead of second-placed VfL Wolfsburg and nine points clear of third-placed Eintracht Frankfurt, so a win at the weekend would secure the championship. It means the Munich side would also wrap up this season's title on Matchday 20, as they did last year at Leverkusen.
After 1976, 2015, 2016, 2021, 2023 and 2024, it would be the seventh league title in the club's history for FCB Women. Three consecutive titles would be a first for the Reds. To date, only 1. FFC Frankfurt (three titles in a row), Turbine Potsdam (four) and VfL Wolfsburg (also four) have previously managed such an impressive feat.
Big points: On the last matchday, the Munich side picked up three very important points in the battle for the championship at Eintracht Frankfurt.
In Klara Bühl, FC Bayern Women boast the best provider in the current Bundesliga campaign. Germany's national team player of the year in 2023 has already delivered an impressive 11 assists this season on top of scoring seven goals herself. This puts her in joint first place on the scorer charts with former Bayern player and current Wolfsburg striker Lineth Beerensteyn (17 goals, 1 assist). Bühl will now be looking to add to her tally against Freiburg, for whom the 24-year-old played herself between 2016 and 2020, and help FCB Women win their third league title in a row.
The two teams have met a total of 45 times in the women's Bundesliga, with the head-to-head record showing a clear advantage for Straus' side. FCB Women have won 32 games, the two teams have drawn six times and SCF have come out on top in a further seven games. At 119:47, the goal difference also clearly reflects the Reds' dominance.
In their most recent home game at the start of 2024, FCB celebrated a resounding 4-0 win at the FC Bayern Campus thanks to goals from Linda Sembrant, Lea Schüller, Linda Dallmann and Kathi Naschenweng, so the signs are good that they'll be crowned champions for the third time in a row.
FC Bayern Women will play the 2025/26 Bundesliga opener at the Allianz Arena:
