Though the big hitters are often held in reserve during the early rounds in the modern era, the competition’s record scorers feature some illustrious names.
With this week’s Carabao Cup action underway, we’ve ranked the five top scorers in League Cup history.
Ian Wright boasted a brilliant goal record in the League Cup, scoring 30 times in just 37 appearances in the competition.
Wright was part of the Arsenal side that won the League Cup in 1992/93, as part of a domestic cup double under George Graham. Incredibly, that triumph remains Arsenal’s last League Cup success.
Alan Shearer is the Premier League’s record scorer with 260 goals, and also ranks among the League Cup’s most prolific players. Shearer scored 32 times in the competition, but never managed to get his hands on the trophy.
Robbie Fowler announced his arrival as one of English football’s most exciting talents with his prolific exploits in this competition. Fowler marked his Liverpool debut with a goal in a second-round tie against Fulham in September 1993, before he scored all five goals in the second leg at Anfield two weeks later.

A two-time winner with Liverpool, Fowler scored 33 goals in the League Cup, including a stunner in the 2001 final triumph against Birmingham City.
Geoff Hurst is best remembered for the hat-trick that sealed England’s 1966 World Cup win, a performance which immortalised the former West Ham forward in football folklore.
Hurst also netted 299 goals during his club career, including an astonishing record of 42 goals in just 43 League Cup games.
Ian Rush is the League Cup’s record scorer, with no player having managed more than his 49 goals since the competition’s introduction in 1960.
Rush recorded 49 goals in the League Cup and lifted the trophy on five occasions with Liverpool. Just two players, Fernandinho and Sergio Aguero (both 6) have won the trophy more times.
