England and France ensured the 2026 World Cup's bronze final was a fixture that won't be forgotten, as the teams shared ten goals in a thrilling clash in Miami.
England secured a 6-4 win over France to secure third place at the tournament, the Three Lions' best performance in aWorld Cup since winning the tournament on home soil in 1966.
In the process, the fixture became one of the highest-scoring games in World Cup history, and the highest for 44 years.
The 1958 World Cup is famous for Pele's emergence inBrazil's maiden triumph, and for a record-breaking tournament from French forward Just Fontaine.
The latter's 13 goals remains a single-tournament record, scored across just six games. Fontaine hit a hat-trick as France thrashed Paraguay 7-3 in their opening game in Sweden.
After the disappointment of a cautious exit to Argentina, the shackles were off for England against France. Thomas Tuchel's team raced into a four-goal half-time lead in the bronze final, with Bukayo Saka's brace adding to efforts from Declan Rice and Ezri Konsa.
France almost staged a miraculous comeback, scoring three times without reply to make it 4-3. Kylian Mbappe scored twice for Les Bleus, breaking theWorld Cup's all-time goal record in the process.
A see-sawing game continued as Saka made it five for England with his hat-trick, before Ousmane Dembele pulled another back for the French. England secured third place in the tournament late on, as Jude Bellingham's solo strike sealed the win.
Hungary hold the record for the biggest win in World Cup history after hitting 10 past El Salvador at the 1982 tournament. It remains the only time a team has scored double-digits in a World Cup game.
Remarkably, Hungary didn't even progress out the group after failing to beat either Belgium or Argentina.
Hungary's Mighty Magyars seemed destined for World Cup success in 1954, having beaten South Korea 9-0 and West Germany 8-3 in the group stage.
Their form continued by scoring four in a famous quarter-final against Brazil, and four more as Uruguay were beaten in extra-time in the semi-finals.
Incredibly, Hungary surrendered a 2-0 lead to lose to the final in a clash called 'The Miracle of Bern'.
The opponents? The very same West Germany side beaten 8-3 in the group stage.
Brazil and Poland needed extra-time to separate them in an 11-goal thriller in 1934. There were hat-tricks on either side for Leonidas and Ernest Wilimowski, with the latter scoring four times for a Poland side who just fell short.
The highest-scoring game in World Cup history was between Austria and Switzerland at the 1954 tournament. The quarter-final clash saw Switzerland lead three-nil after 19 minutes, only for Austria to score three times in two minutes to level.
Austria edged ahead to lead 5-4 at half-time, with the drama continuing after the break to rack up a record scoreline.
