The Premier League has concluded for another calendar year and it has been another memorable 12 months in England’s top flight.
As we prepare to welcome in 2025, here are some of the images that defined the Premier League this year.
Declan Rice’s transfer to Arsenal was one of the most high-profile deals of last season, as the England midfielder completed a club-record move to the Emirates. He made an instant impact to finish as runner-up for the FWA Footballer of the Year award, and provided old side West Ham a reminder of his quality. Rice scored a thumping effort as Arsenal won 6-0 at the London Stadium, though respectfully refused to celebrate against his old side.
Cole Palmer’s emergence was one of the stories of the year and the Chelsea magician produced one of his best tricks in April. Palmer scored twice deep into stoppage time as Chelsea snatched victory from the jaws of defeat against Manchester United.
Having given up a two-goal lead earlier in the game, Chelsea trailed with 99 minutes and 17 seconds on the clock. Palmer proceeded to score twice in the final seconds, with his winner – timed at 100 minutes 39 seconds – the latest in Premier League history.
Incredible.
Everton have not had much joy when it comes to the Merseyside Derby in recent years. April’s win over their cross-town neighbours was one to savour, however, as Sean Dyche’s side upset the title-chasing Reds at Goodison Park.
Jarrad Branthwaite and Dominic Calvert-Lewin were on target as an electric Everton crowd toasted their first home league win over Liverpool since 2010.
Aston Villa exceeded all expectations to gatecrash the top four last season, as Unai Emery’s revival of the club culminated in Champions League qualification.
The Villans confirmed their place in Europe’s elite for the first time after top-four rivals Tottenham Hotspur lost to Manchester City. The following fixture saw a party atmosphere as Villa welcomed Liverpool to the Midlands.
Jurgen Klopp dropped a bombshell announcement in January when it was confirmed he would leave Liverpool at the end of the season. The German’s announcement led to an outpour of tributes, as the most successful Liverpool manager of the modern era said farewell to the Premier League. A huge character and terrific manager who won it all on Merseyside, England’s top flight is a poorer place without him.
Manchester City have had more than their share of firsts under Pep Guardiola.
The first-ever team to reach 100 points in a top-flight campaign. No side had previously won a domestic treble before the Blues. In 2024, the Citizens became the first side in English top-flight history to win four titles in a row. History.
Leicester bounced back from a shock relegation at the first attempt and it did not take long for Jamie Vardy to return to his usual antics. On the opening night, the Foxes forward taunted the Tottenham fans over their lack of Premier League titles.
Vardy 1-0 Spurs.
Arguably the most spiteful rivalries in football are between teams in diorect competition. Over the last two seasons, Manchester City and Arsenal have developed a growing feud. Their September showdown was a classic, with four goals evenly shared, a last-gasp leveller, and plenty of needle.
When City’s stoppage-time equaliser went in, Erling Haaland proceeded to throw the loose ball at the back of Gabriel’s head, a moment of shithousery following their tussle. At full-time, he clashed with Mikel Arteta. Three words said by Haaland have since come back to haunt him, with City’s season imploding since the striker told Arteta: “Stay humble, eh?”
Nottingham Forest narrowly avoided relegation from the Premier League in May. After summer of work on the training ground and some shrewd signings, Forest are flying high. Nuno Espirito Santo’s side sit second in the table at the turn of the new year, with their season so far including famous wins at Anfield and Old Trafford. Forest are the only team to have beaten Liverpool in any competition in 2024/25.
After FA Cup success salvaged his job last season, Erik ten Hag used up one too many lives in 2024/25. The Dutchman was dismissed at Manchester United after the Red Devils opened the season with just four wins from 14 games. After backing Ten Hag with around £200m on new signings in the summer, it was a cut-throat decision from new owners Ineos.
Rodri was recognised as football’s finest in October, as the Spaniard claimed the Ballon d’Or. He became the first Premier League footballer to win the award since 2008 and the first Spanish man to claim the honour in 64 years.
Things have been fairly bleak at Manchester United.
One afternoon of solace arrived in December, however, as the Red Devils snatched an improbable derby win. Trailing with just two minutes to go, United scored twice late on to turn defeat into victory. Amad Diallo, who won the penalty for the first and scored the second, wrote his name into Mancunian folklore.
