Liverpool are on the verge of confirming the signing of Hugo Ekitike, a young French striker whose career is about to take a major leap forward. While many fans are poring over his statistics and highlight reels, one endorsement stands out above the rest: that of Lionel Messi.
Lionel Messi and Hugo Ekitike briefly shared the pitch at Paris Saint-Germain during the 2022-23 season. Though Ekitike struggled under then-manager Luis Enrique, finding himself left out of matchday squads and the Champions League roster, he quietly earned the respect of the World Cup winner.

According to a 2022 report by L’Équipe, Messi affectionately dubbed Ekitike the “iron rod,” a nod to the striker’s slim but athletic build and his sudden bursts of acceleration that caught even the Argentine by surprise. The report described Messi as something of a mentor figure, offering guidance and encouragement as the young Frenchman navigated the pressures of life at one of Europe’s most demanding clubs.
In a squad overflowing with superstars, it says something that Messi took the time to support and recognise Ekitike’s potential.
After an underwhelming stint in Paris, Ekitike’s career revived in Germany. Initially joining Eintracht Frankfurt on loan in January 2024, he made the move permanent last summer for €17.5 million. The 2024-25 Bundesliga season proved transformative: 15 goals, 12 assists, and a well-deserved place in the Bundesliga Team of the Season.
His game matured in Frankfurt, where he paired blistering pace with technical finesse, earning admirers across Europe. It is this version of Ekitike that Liverpool, now led by Premier League-winning manager Arne Slot, are bringing to Anfield.
Liverpool are reportedly paying up to £79 million for Ekitike, a figure that reflects both his current form and his future promise. PSG have secured a 20 percent sell-on clause, a reminder of their lingering belief in his potential despite the past frustrations.
Ekitike is expected to sign a six-year deal that keeps him at Anfield until 2031. He will soon join his new teammates in Hong Kong as Liverpool prepare for the upcoming season, eager to defend their Premier League crown under Slot’s watch.
For Liverpool fans, there will be excitement but also questions. Is Ekitike ready for the step up to English football? Can he handle the expectations at a club of Liverpool’s stature? While time will provide answers, the fact that Lionel Messi saw something special in him at PSG should not be dismissed lightly.
When a player once guided by Messi arrives at your club, there is reason to believe that his journey is only just beginning.
