These three Luton Town players could depart the club in January, either on loan or permanently.

Luton Town have not enjoyed the start to the season that they would have hoped for.

Last season, the Hatters were competing against some of the biggest teams in Europe and were putting up a decent fight in the Premier League despite having limited resources compared to the clubs around them.

They did eventually suffer relegation, but they were able to keep their heads held high after a spirited effort under much-loved manager Rob Edwards.

Unfortunately, this season has seen a big drop-off in performances as Luton find themselves towards the bottom end of the Championship table.

The Luton faithful will be hoping that Edwards can turn things around, but things need to change rather quickly if the Hatters are to keep hopes of a top-flight return alive.

January will come around quicker than expected, and Luton must use it wisely. New signings will be sought, but at the same time, there may be some departures.

Football League World looks at three Luton players that could leave in the upcoming January transfer window.

Joe Taylor

Joe Taylor has proved that he knows where the goal is in the EFL, but he is yet to really be given the regular game time with Luton that he needs.

This season, he has made minimal Championship appearances, and spent most of his time on the bench under Edwards, so a move away from Kenilworth Road in January could be calling.

Taylor has previously enjoyed loan spells with Colchester United in League Two and Lincoln City in League One, where he scored a total of 21 goals across the two spells.

In the summer, Huddersfield Town identified Taylor as a transfer target, but nothing materialised in the end. The Terriers would be smart to go back in for the striker in January, but even if they do not, there will likely be a number of clubs interested.

Pelly Ruddock Mpanzu

Pelly Ruddock Mpanzu is nothing short of a modern-day legend at Kenilworth Road, having spent over a decade on the books at the club. He has amazingly gone from non-league to the Premier League with Luton Town and played in each of the top five tiers of English football with them.

Despite being a key individual for the Hatters over the last decade, his game time has declined, and he is no longer favoured by Edwards.

Mpanzu's contract expires in the summer and a January exit feels possible. He has failed to really work his way into the side this season so a winter departure could make sense for all parties.

Whenever the midfielder does leave the club, he is deserving of a grand farewell given the impact he has had at Luton over the years.

Joe Johnson

Joe Johnson is a young left-back who could be set for regular senior football in the very near future.

The 18-year-old made his first league start in Luton's opener against Burnley this season and has since featured off the bench, so it seems only a matter of time until he earns a loan move.

Despite being just 18, he even made two Premier League appearances last season, which will look great on his CV to any potentially interested clubs.
