We really weren’t expecting to see new Chelsea signing Joao Pedro in the Club World Cup quarter final last night, given he only signed for us 3 days ago and had had just one proper training session.
But he came on as a second half sub and looked really sharp and dangerous. He’s got great physicality to hold the ball up, and also showed some really neat touches and flicks to bring teammates in.
He gave his first Chelsea TV interview after the game where he was asked about his performance and the victory against Palmeiras.

“It’s an important win. I was on holiday, so to come on and to play like I did is very satisfying for me. I’m very happy to get through to the next round, but now we need to rest and focus on Fluminense.”
The Blues scoring was opened by Cole Palmer, who stroked in a lovely finish. Joao Pedro gave his thoughts on his new teammates:
“Cole is a very good player. Everyone knows that he can change the game like he did today and I enjoyed playing alongside him. The manager told me to play free, do my best and I think I did. It’s important we got through to the next round.”
The game against Fluminense has special significance for Joao Pedro, as he started his professional career there. He was asked about how it would feel to go and face his old side:
“It will be nice to see some friends, but I think now I need to focus on Chelsea. I need to enjoy the next game and we will see a few friends.”
