We saw last night as Manchester City went down 3-1 to Real Madrid that the current City squad is in a state of limbo. City’s rebuild is underway, but for now, Pep Guardiola is working with a squad that is not quite balanced enough or capable of playing the way he demands consistently. We saw this last night as Abdukodir Khusanov stepped in and did a commendable job at right-back. That appears to be a position of desperate need for Manchester City to fill in the summer transfer market.
On that front, it appears that a player who could fill the right-back void in Pep Guardiola’s squad and add the athleticism, pace and technical ability they so desperately need may be available next summer. That player is Jeremie Frimpong. Mark Brus has relayed a report from Rudy Galetti for CaughtOffside that the Dutch international can reportedly leave Bayer Leverkusen for a relatively cheap transfer fee. Furthermore, Brus reports that there is a ‘gentleman’s agreement’ in place for Frimpong to leave the current Bundesliga champions next summer. Leverkusen would accept offers of around €40 million for Frimpong as per Brus’ report. Lastly, Brus adds that Liverpool and Real Madrid have an interest in signing the dynamic wingback.
We saw last night that Manchester City lacks pace and athleticism all over the pitch. A player like Jeremie Frimpong would add that to Pep Guardiola’s squad. Since bursting onto the scene with Xabi Alonso’s side Frimpong has established himself as one of the most dynamic attacking wingbacks in European football. Although he has his flaws defensively he could potentially add a different dynamic to Manchester City’s play. He could slot in at right-back and play similarly to Josko Gvardiol on City’s left. That way Manchester City would have two attacking options at the full-back positions on either side of the pitch. Playing both Frimpong and Gvardiol would have its risks, but there would be a more dynamic look at Pep Guardiola’s side if it was employed.
It would make sense for Manchester City to move for Jeremie Frimpong in the summer. He’s a player who adds attributes that Pep Guardiola’s squad desperately lacks. It remains to be seen if he is available in the summer. But if he is for a cut-price fee, it is a move that Manchester City should pursue to add a more dynamic look to the City squad.
