For a spell this season there was real fear Wolves might set an unwanted Premier League record. An upturn over the festive period has dragged them clear of the very lowest tallies, and with the run-in ahead they could target more.
After an awful start under Vitor Pereira, the club dismissed the Portuguese and appointed former defender Rob Edwards. Early results did not immediately improve and Wolves remained bottom. ExpressAndStar.com notes their revival gathered pace over winter.
They have since topped Derby County’s 11 from 2007/08, Southampton’s 12 from last season and Sunderland’s 15 from 2005/06. They have also moved beyond the 16 posted by Sheffield United in 2023/24 and Huddersfield Town in 2018/19.
They now sit on the same number of points as Aston Villa managed in 2017/18, when Villa were relegated from the top flight. With seven games left, there are 21 points still on offer.
Targets they could yet reel in include Sunderland’s 19 in 2002/03, Norwich’s 21 in 2019/20 and 22 in 2021/22, Sheffield United’s 23 in 2020/21, Watford’s 24 in 1999/00 and Sunderland’s 24 in 2016/17, the 25s of Wolves in 2011/12, QPR in 2012/13 and Southampton in 2022/23, Bradford’s 26 in 2000/01, Leicester’s 28 in 2001/02 and Watford’s 28 in 2006/07, plus the 30 point hauls of Cardiff in 2013/14 and QPR in 2014/15.
