The breaking news that Rangers are attempting to bring back Lee McCulloch in a senior recruitment role at Ibrox is news which certainly bodes well for the Rangers identity of the club.
While there are conflicting reports about just what level of influence Lee McCulloch had at Brighton for the 18 months he was there, nevertheless, he is at least a Rangers man. There is a real lack of that on the staff at Ibrox.
We are not clear yet on whether this would be a role appointment. We are also unclear about the men above him, Dan Purdy as Technical Director, or the owner himself, Andrew Cabana. However, we would not object to Jig coming back to Rangers in a role of this magnitude.
He is very much a good Rangers man even if he is not someone we had ever contemplated as returning to Rangers. He is also not a name many fans promoted as potential staff. Nevertheless, very few fans would not welcome Lee McCulloch back.
He is a Rangers man. He knows what this club is all about. And he knows what it takes as a player. He has even been through abuse as a player.
Back in the days when he was constantly selected by Ally McCoist in any slot, he suffered. This happened no matter where he was played. It was especially in defence, which was not his natural forte.
He eventually got booed after resentment built over that selection. Those were the old days. He took it on the chin. He never said a bad word about the club because he is one of us.
Even our own fans turn on each other. We give each other nonsense all the time. That is just the way the club is when things are not going too well. We assume it is probably similar at other clubs too.
Nevertheless, Jig in a recruitment role is someone who knows a Rangers standard player. That is one thing we know for sure. Jig was a big part of Walter’s second spell at the club.
He definitely knows how to win things. He knows what it takes at this club. And he also happened to be the first Rangers man to recognise what was happening with the Scottish national side.
He retired before Burley could properly sink his teeth into Rangers. Consequently he avoided the damage to the relationship between club and country. Jig was the first man to suss this and got out quickly.
So he is certainly not a stupid boy. He is not unintelligent. He might not be a genius. We do not know him terribly well. However, he is a good Rangers man.
He knows what it takes to win at the club. He also knows what kind of player is good enough here. That applies to a Rangers side that should be winning things.
His arrival would be a step in the right direction. The question is whether he will want to do the job. We shall see.
