Chelsea have an absolutely huge game today against Fulham, with their Champions League hopes hanging by a thread and a huge amount of pressure on manager Enzo Maresca.
A huge amount of what they’re able to do in the summer will depend on whether they make it into Europe’s top competition or not, but while they’re waiting to find out their final position the club still have to press ahead on their summer plans.
The priority is signing a striker – the fact that Nicolas Jackson is going to start today despite having played 12 games without a goal should make that pretty clear. And there are players in that position we’ve been linked very heavily to. In an ideal world we would wrap up a deal right away, and have the new arrival playing for us at the Club World Cup in less than two months’ time.
David Ornstein has today put out some information on the three players currently top of our list in that position.
According to the Athletic’s top transfer insider, we’ve had our eyes on Liam Delap of Ipswich, Benjamin Sesko of RB Leipzig, and Hugo Ekitike of Frankfurt.

What all three of these guys have in common is that they’re younger, and look to be still improving rather than players at the peak of their ability (and price).
Delap is 22, Ekitike is 22, Sesko is 21. It confirms what we heard some months ago, that our grand plans to sign an elite striker at the peak of their powers (like Victor Osimhen or Viktor Gyokeres) have been replaced by a desire to secure a rising star.
That’s part business decision, and part faith in Jackson, who despite his recent dry spell, has impressed in his time at Chelsea overall.
