With Premier League safety near, Florent Ghisolfi faces three immediate squad calls before a pivotal summer.

According to Sunderland Echo, he said last week Sunderland will strengthen while prioritising stability after last summer’s overhaul. The scale of business hinges on Lutsharel Geertruida, Dennis Cirkin and Bertrand Traoré.

Geertruida, on loan from RB Leipzig, can be signed for about £20 million. He has been valuable across roles but rarely first choice under Régis Le Bris. Sunderland must also persuade him amid January interest from Liverpool.

Cirkin’s exit would demand a new left back, and losing him for nothing alongside Dan Neil would jar with the model. Fitness setbacks persist, and he must weigh chances of dislodging Reinildo, with Trai Hume also competing.

Early view, a parting feels possible given limited starts, though it would be costly to replace him.

Traoré’s late capture quickly made him first choice on the right as Sunderland pulled clear of trouble. The club hold a one-year option and, if fit, he offers plenty, but injuries since December complicate timing, so a call may wait for his return.

Beyond contracts, academy director Robin Nicholls departs for a New York role this summer, with a board-appointed successor set to work closely with Ghisolfi. Further backroom strengthening could follow Luciano Vulcano’s exit.

Priority now is targets with an expanded scouting and recruitment team, navigating new financial rules, moving on fringe players and returning loanees, and preparing for bids for leading talents, possibly by opening fresh contract talks.
