Sunderland face a delicate call over Anthony Patterson this summer as they balance squad planning, valuation and risk ahead of the 2026/27 season.
According to Sunderland Echo, the goalkeeper is back on Wearside preparing for the campaign, but a permanent exit is widely anticipated if terms align.
Robin Roefs is established as number one and Sunderland moved in January for Melker Ellborg, recognising Patterson needs regular football. Reclaiming the shirt looks unlikely, so the next step must suit club and player.
Sunderland believe any buyer would be getting a major asset, a 26-year-old homegrown keeper with nearly 200 senior games and five seasons of consistent form, often among the EFL’s better performers for save percentage.
SCR considerations are pivotal. Academy sales are pure profit, averaged over three years, so a fee in the region of £8-10 million could create roughly £3 million of headroom, with Ellborg carrying low amortisation after a modest outlay.
The snag is that most suitors are Championship clubs, and committing that sum to a goalkeeper may be difficult without their own windfall. A loan is less attractive now Patterson has two years left, unless tied to conditions, for instance an obligation to buy on promotion, or a smaller upfront fee with substantial add-ons.
Patterson is thought to favour a permanent move, which would also suit Sunderland. Pragmatism, and patience, may be required while interested clubs make room to get closer to the valuation.
