Very few events can bring a city the size of Guadalajara to a complete standstill — and one of them is the Clásico Tapatío. This rivalry runs through the blood and DNA of every resident of the Perla de Occidente, and the Nación Chiva feels it intensely. These battles are played with maximum intensity, both on the pitch and in the stands, to prove once again why Guadalajara belongs to Guadalajara.
Over the years, this rivalry has delivered moments and results that remain forever etched in the memories of the Rojiblancos. With this weekend’s meeting between Chivas and Atlas approaching, it’s the perfect time to revisit some of the Rebaño’s most memorable victories in the Clásico Tapatío.
The Day the Iconic ‘Tubo’ Gómez Image Was Born
On April 24, 1955, the Clásico Tapatío was played in the Copa de Occidente, ending with a commanding 5-0 Rojiblanco victory. By the 16th minute, the Rebaño Sagrado was already up 4-0, thanks to relentless high pressure and total dominance from Guadalajara, which gave the Rojinegros no chance to create danger.
That day produced one of the most iconic images in Chivas history: goalkeeper Jaime 'Tubo' Gómez calmly sat down to read a magazine thrown from the stands, taking advantage of Atlas’ lack of attacking presence. The image became immortalized alongside one of Guadalajara’s most dominant performances in the Clásico Tapatío.
Marco Fabián’s Confirmation as the Rival’s Nemesis
On Sunday, May 17, 2015, Estadio Jalisco hosted the second leg of the CL15 Quarterfinals between Chivas and Atlas. The match ended with a commanding 1-4 victory for the Rebaño, fueled by an outstanding performance from Marco Fabián and securing a spot in the Semifinals.
The Rojiblanco attacker opened the scoring in the 4th minute, then extended the lead with two stunning goals in the 16th and 38th minutes, delivering a memorable performance that decided the match before halftime. That night confirmed that the Rojinegros were always his favorite opponent.
The First Hat Trick from the Current Golden Boot Winner
The most recent chapter remains fresh in the minds of every Chivahermano. Once again, Guadalajara dominated its city rival with a commanding 4-1 victory in Matchday 15 of AP25.
Armando González took the ball home after scoring his first professional hat trick: he opened the scoring in the 9th minute with a precise header. He struck again in the 28th minute and completed the feat in the 50th after beating the goalkeeper one-on-one. That night showcased the power and quality of Gabriel Milito’s Chivas.
‘El Comandante’ and the Late Match-Winner
In Matchday 14 of CL16, Jair Pereira made Estadio AKRON erupt. Despite constant pressure from the Rojiblancos, the ball simply refused to go in. Just when the Rojinegros thought they would escape the Rojiblanca Fortress with a point, 'El Comandante' had the final word.
In the 92nd minute, Pereira rose inside the box and powered home a decisive header to seal the 1-0 victory and spark celebrations among the Chivahermanos.
Alexis Vega’s Breakthrough Night
Another Clásico Tapatío fully painted Rojiblanco. In Matchday 7 of CL19, Alexis Vega announced himself as a Chivas goal scorer with a hat trick that sealed a 3-0 win at Estadio AKRON.
The forward delivered a brilliant performance against the city rival: he opened the scoring in the 7th minute, doubled the lead in the 22nd, and completed his hat trick in the 60th, giving the Nación Rojiblanca yet another unforgettable chapter in this rivalry.
