After making the trip to Catalunya for a La Liga meeting with Espanyol, Los Blancos found themselves condemned to the wrong side of a 1-0 result.

This came after Carlos Romero netted the game’s only goal five minutes from time.

As much marked a double blow for Real Madrid, after Romero was extremely lucky to avoid a red card for a horror challenge on Kylian Mbappé earlier in the half.

Speaking to the media on the back of the full-time whistle at the RCDE Stadium, it therefore came as little surprise when the subject of the hosts’ potential red card was put to Carlo Ancelotti.

And the Italian did not hold back in his response, assuring:

“A war between Real Madrid and refs? I don’t want to talk about that. All I will say, is that the red was very obvious, and the whole world saw it.

“This is why VAR was invented, for things like this. The referee’s decision makes no sense.”
