Todd Boehly has been speaking a little to the cameras at the Milken Institute Global Investors’ Symposium in Hong Kong. We’ve already heard a little about his thoughts on the stadium, where he hinted at a future away from Stamford Bridge.

That’s the big picture and the long term question. What we’re much more interested in right now, however, is his take on the football team. The stadium is one thing – how does he feel about the billion he’s pumped in and where it leaves his team now?

“If you look at the evolution of the team. It’s a team that is young, that’s got long contracts. All these things are new,” the co-owner said of the project, with a slightly defensive tone to his response.

“If you look at what’s actually happening, then you’ll see there is core stability and I think we are executing on a plan that will ultimately have Chelsea where they need to be. I mean we are sat in the top four right now,” Boehly pointed out when asked for more detail on what he made of his club 3 years post-purchase.

Chelsea in the right direction despite mistakes

So the line is ignore the mistakes and the wasted money – the ends will justify the means, and the team are currently on course to finish in the Champions League places and achieve their objective for the season.

That’s fair enough – the macro view will see the “project” moving in the right direction, and the minutiae of mistakes made in buying and selling players will ultimately be lost in the noise if we make that big step forward.

Privately he might be a lot more frustrated and concerned by some of the wasted money and some of the decisions – but certainly publicly he’s not going to let any cracks show.
