Thiago Mendes said Neymar disrespected him and Vasco supporters during Santos’ 2-1 win at Vila Belmiro in the fourth round of the Brasileirão on Thursday night. According to Globo.com, the pair clashed after the opening goal.

At 25 minutes of the first half, after Santos scored, Neymar put a finger to his lips in a gesture silencing the Vasco end.

At half-time, Neymar told a pitchside interviewer that Thiago Mendes was a babaca, recalling he had been injured in France after a challenge by the midfielder when they were at Paris Saint-Germain and Lyon. He said Mendes had promised to do it again and questioned whether he would be man enough to follow through.

After the match, Mendes said he had only asked for respect, stating Neymar had told the Vasco supporters to shut up during his celebration and that he felt disrespected. He added that these things are part of football and the game moves on.

Mendes also criticised referee Rafael Rodrigo Klein, claiming decisions went Neymar’s way and not Vasco’s. He said they could do nothing about it, accepted the defeat, and would get back to work with an important Campeonato Carioca fixture ahead.
