Thiago Motta publicly blasted his players for the first time in the season following the stunning Coppa Italia elimination on penalties against a depleted Empoli side (via SOSFanta).
“I feel shame for how we played in the first half, and I hope the same goes for the squad. We can err in everything, but not in our attitude. I made a mistake in not conveying the importance of wearing a jersey like the Juventus one. We deserved to bow out. I hope the criticism will be harsh. The public was even too kind given what occurred. I hope to see an immediate reaction. I feel a major responsibility.”
Thiago Motta indicated the root of the problem.
“Having the right mentality means understanding who you are and what you do to deserve to stay here without making demands. We haven’t given anything today. We have hit rock bottom. I believe in the technical element, as we have quality players, but that’s rarely enough. You need something else. The attitude is the main thing. It’s non-negotiable. I’ve been insisting on this since I came here. I will never accept something like today, but it’s my fault for not underlining the magnitude of the game and representing this team.”
Thiago Motta saw his team crash out of a cup twice in a week.
“It’s serious. We were disappointed after the Champions League, but we had given everything in that game. We didn’t do it today and weren’t passionate about what we were doing. There are no excuses. It’s a terrible sensation. Winning is a need in a club like ours, but it wasn’t the case today. We completely botched the match.”
