Andrea Pirlo has agreed to take charge of Italy, while Thiago Motta is reported to have declined the role, according to Corriere dello Sport.

The position had already been turned down by Pep Guardiola and Carlo Ancelotti.

Motta was contacted by technical director Paolo Maldini and his adviser Leonardo, and is said to have politely rebuffed the Italian Football Federation's approach.

Motta, previously head coach of Juventus and Bologna, has not returned to the touchline since leaving Juventus in March 2025.

Pirlo, the former AC Milan midfielder, is expected to sign a four-year contract.
