Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois says he wants to step away from Belgium duty for one year after the 1-2 World Cup quarter-final defeat by Spain.

"I would like not to come for a year, otherwise it will be the end," he told RTBF.

Courtois felt his left thigh after repeated long clearances and said he could no longer hit long from his area.

Head coach Rudi Garcia, judging during the second cooling break that the keeper was not at 100%, made the change, with Senne Lammens replacing him in the 71st minute.

Courtois also referred to planned talks with Vincent Mannaert, the national team’s sporting director.
