A very tough opening match had seen Eddie Howe’s side very unlucky not to get something at St James’ Park, losing 2-1 to La Liga winners and last season’s Champions League semi-finalists Barcelona.

That though followed by an outstanding visit to Lotto Park for Newcastle United.

Up against the reigning Belgian domestic title winners Union Saint-Gilloise, a commanding performance from Eddie Howe’s players, fully deserving the 4-0 away win.

Last night it was more of the same, the game ending Newcastle 3 Benfica 0 but in truth it could and should have been an even wider winning scoreline.

All the Newcastle players contributed to a brilliant Champions League night at St James’ Park.

Remember, the top eight will automatically go through to the last 16 knockout stage.

Whilst those finishing 9th to 24th will go into two-legged play-offs to decide the other eight that will make up the final 16.

Eddie Howe’s side having now played three of their eight league matches in the Champions League so far.

This is how the Champions League table now looks on Wednesday (22 October 2025) morning:
