If a report from SunSport is believed to be true, Jamie Vardy is keen on a reunion with Brendan Rodgers at Celtic after assessing all his options over the past couple of months. The former Leicester City striking ace is available on a Bosman, as he opted against extending his stay at King Power to take up one final challenge before calling it a day.

The Remarkable ‘Rags To Riches’ Rise

The 38-year-old former Three Lions international had a fairy tale career, even though he was released by Sheffield Wednesday before turning professional. He then joined the non-league outfit Stocksbridge Park Steels and eventually secured a regular role high up the pitch. FC Halifax Town snapped him up in 2010, and his exquisite scoring record earned him a transfer to Fleetwood Town a year later.

After an impressive stint in non-league football, Vardy completed a record £1.7m move (including add-ons) in the Championship with Leicester. Despite a below-par maiden campaign, the veteran ‘number 9’ was instrumental to their top-flight promotion in 2014.

His aggression and flair helped him attune to the grind and demands of the Premier League, as he not only helped them avoid relegation but also netted 24 goals en route to conquering the 2015-16 league crown. That season was truly the absolute stuff of legends.

Vardy continued to impress while spearheading the attack, as he also played his part in the Foxes’ 2020-21 FA Cup triumph under Brendan Rodgers. At the age of 38, the prolific centre-forward fired 10 times last season in all competitions, but was let down by his teammates, as the club went down after a dreadful campaign. With 200 goals and 71 assists in 500 games, he left Leicester as an all-time great and a notable figure in Premier League history.

Why Celtic Must Tie Him Down

Celtic, meanwhile, have yet to replace Kyogo Furuhashi, who left them in January. Jota’s long-term injury absence forced Rodgers to restore Daizen Maeda down the left, thus leaving him with Adam Idah as the only regular option up top. Johnny Kenny and Shin Yamada are only good enough as squad players, whereas Idah’s lack of firepower early into the season further highlights the necessity of quality additions.

Although the Hoops are still keeping tabs on David Strelec, signing Vardy could prove to be a shrewd move regardless of the Slovak star’s arrival. The Englishman spent his best years under Rodgers, as he won the 2019-20 Premier League Golden Boot and maintained his exquisite scoring record. His fitness and vigour are exemplary, and he could be an asset for the champions of Scotland for at least two more seasons.
