In a season that has already felt like a fitness obstacle course for Tottenham Hotspur, Thomas Frank finds himself navigating another setback. The manager, who has been methodical and unflappable since arriving in north London, delivered his latest injury update with the kind of pragmatism that has defined his early tenure. The situation is straightforward enough, yet its timing could hardly be worse as Spurs face a demanding run of fixtures.
The moment was jarring at Stamford Bridge. Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez’s clearing volley collided with Lucas Bergvall’s head at point-blank range, leaving the Swedish midfielder visibly disoriented. As he staggered and clutched the side of his head, Tottenham Hotspur’s medical team swiftly intervened. Despite Bergvall attempting to stay on, arguing with staff and appealing to Thomas Frank to return to the pitch, caution prevailed.
“That was a concussion,” Frank explained. “So he totally couldn’t stay on and I think the medical team did a good job in that aspect.
“Of course, we would have loved to have him continue. That’s why we picked him in the starting XI. Unfortunately, that couldn’t happen. So others will step in. Xavi knew the game plan.”

Bergvall’s reaction highlighted a player desperate to contribute. Yet Tottenham handled the situation exactly as elite sport now demands, prioritising player welfare. Xavi Simons stepped in as a concussion substitute, while Bergvall headed directly down the tunnel.
The timing leaves Spurs stretched in midfield with vital games ahead. Bergvall is expected to miss the Champions League meeting with FC Copenhagen and the Premier League clash with an improving Manchester United at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. The schedule then pauses for the November international break before resuming with a north London derby away at Arsenal followed by a Champions League trip to Paris Saint-Germain.
For Thomas Frank, who has emphasised tactical cohesion and mental resilience, these fixtures represent a defining period. Early-season rhythm can fracture under injury strain, and Tottenham Hotspur will need depth, structure and belief to stay on track.
Fitness issues have already shaped this campaign. Cristian Romero, Destiny Udogie and Odobert returning against Chelsea offers encouragement, and goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario shook off a recent knock to continue. Yet the absentee list remains extensive: Dominic Solanke, Dejan Kulusevski, Archie Gray, Ben Davies, Yves Bissouma, Radu Dragusin, Kota Takai and James Maddison are all out.
Squad depth is often the great determinator in seasons where domestic ambition intersects with European demands. Tottenham Hotspur have shown flashes of sophistication in Frank’s system, but this injury update underlines the fragility beneath the surface. With Bergvall sidelined, creative responsibility increases on others, and adaptability becomes essential.
Still, Frank’s tone remains measured. He trusts his medical staff, trusts his squad and trusts his structure. Spurs fans will hope that composure translates to results as a defining stretch of the season arrives.
