Thomas Lemar’s Girona revival has gathered pace, the Atlético Madrid loanee scoring in successive games, including Monday’s 2-1 win over Barcelona.

He ended a 1,058-day drought in the 1-1 draw at Sevilla on 8 February, then struck again. Speaking to DAZN Spain, he said renewed fitness helps him find rhythm and that he has improved at Atlético and intends to progress further at Girona.

Never prolific, the 30-year-old’s second season at Monaco brought 14 goals and 14 assists in all competitions. His last run of back-to-back goals dates to November 2016.

He has started seven league games in a row, his longest sequence since September to October 2015 with Monaco.

Signed by Atlético in 2018 for €72 million, then their third-costliest recruit, he played heavily across five seasons and won La Liga in 2021, yet never became indispensable to Diego Simeone, who felt adaptation would be difficult and noted a language barrier.

At Girona, Michel has granted him freedom and trust, describing him as a game-changer in peak physical condition. The coach wants to manage his workload across a long season. On loan until summer and contracted to Atlético through 2027, his resurgence could tempt Girona, 12th in La Liga, and others to pursue a permanent deal.
