Thomas Meunier adds European pedigree as Sunderland make first summer signing | OneFootball

Thomas Meunier has joined Sunderland on a two-year deal, becoming the club’s first summer signing. Sunderland now head into a Europa League campaign as novices, with this only their second venture into European competition and their first since 1973.

According to Sunderland Echo, the former Paris Saint-Germain and Borussia Dortmund defender adds further experience to Regis Le Bris’s squad. The Belgium international has made 91 European appearances across qualifiers, group phases and knockouts.

Only one current Sunderland player has featured more often in continental competition. Wilson Isidor has three outings, two in the Europa League and one in Champions League qualifying. Trai Hume has five, one in Champions League qualifying and four in Conference League qualifying.

Melker Ellborg totals seven, five in the Europa League and two in Champions League qualifying. Enzo Le Fee has nine, all in the Europa League.

That quartet supplement Meunier’s record as the Black Cats prepare to rejoin UEFA competition under Le Bris.
