Thomas Meunier has arrived in the North East to undergo a medical, with Sunderland closing in on their first signing of the summer. According to The Athletic’s David Ornstein, the Belgium international is set to sign a two-year deal at the Stadium of Light. He would link up with Regis Le Bris’ Europa League squad.
The right-sided defender came through Standard Liège and began his senior career with Royal Excelsior Virton. He then joined Club Brugge, making almost 200 appearances and winning the Belgian league and cup.
Meunier moved to Paris Saint-Germain in 2016 and was a regular across four seasons, lifting three Ligue 1 titles, two Coupe de France wins, three Coupe de la Ligue wins and three Trophée des Champions. He later played for Borussia Dortmund, Trabzonspor and Lille. He made 128 PSG appearances, 105 as a starter.
He won his first Belgium cap in a 3-1 friendly victory over Colombia in November 2013 but missed the 2014 World Cup. He went on to play at the 2018 and 2022 tournaments.
At the 2026 World Cup he made three appearances before Belgium lost 2-1 to Spain in the quarter-finals last week. He has 83 caps and 10 goals, the most recent in a 4-2 qualifier against Wales in October last year. Belgium finished fourth in 2018.
A decade ago he said there were seven clubs interested, naming Torino, Napoli, Sunderland, West Ham and PSG, and rated a 30 percent chance of joining PSG while stressing the need for minutes. In March 2019 he even asked followers for a link to stream Sunderland’s Papa Johns Trophy final against Portsmouth.
