With the title – his 35th piece of silverware – the 36-year-old can now call himself the most decorated German player of all time, surpassing Toni Kroos, with whom he had previously shared the record.

Müller, who racked up a goal and an assist in the final, downplayed his new record in an interview with Sport Bild.

“I’d rather say: ‘Germany’s most successful title collector,’” he said.

“The question is always how you weigh these titles. One player might win more domestic championships, while another has more Champions League victories.”

In comparison, Kroos has lifted the Champions League trophy six times with Real Madrid, while Müller has won it twice with Bayern Munich.
