Full-back has struggled with injury this season

Thomas Tuchel says he plans to contact as many as 60 England hopefuls - including Trent Alexander-Arnold - to offer ‘honest feedback’ before selecting his final World Cup squad.

Tuchel’s Three Lions went unbeaten in qualifying for next summer’s tournament, without conceding a goal. They capped the campaign with a 2-0 defeat of Albania in Tirana on Sunday night.

Speaking at full-time, Tuchel outlined his plan to contact every player on his World Cup squad longlist, also suggesting that he could personally visit Alexander-Arnold in Madrid.

The defender has struggled for minutes since moving to Real Madrid, due in part to injury, and was replaced in the squad by Jarell Quansah in November.

Asked whether Alexander-Arnold has a chance of representing England in the United States, the German said: “First of all, it’s my job now to make contact with everyone, players like Trent.

“Players that are on our longlist — 55 to 60 players — to reach out, be in touch and explain to them why they were not here.

“Explain to them what they have to do, where they can improve — can they do something [to get selected] or is it just a choice [of mine]? This is my job in the next weeks and months.”

On selecting Quansah ahead of Alexander-Arnold, he added: “Of course I have a lot of trust in Jarell. I see his talent, but I see the package. He is tall, he is fast, he is strong in build-up. He is strong in the air.

"I saw him playing very strong for Liverpool in this position [right-back], so I always wanted to try.

"And he plays every minute for Leverkusen since the Under-21 Euros, so he is at the moment a tiny bit ahead."

Tuchel continued, adding that he does not enjoy phone calls for such chats: “[It’s] better on FaceTime.

“Then I see the expression, at least, and get a feeling for the person. Or I need to visit them, visit training grounds.

“We can do group visits — we can do Jude [Bellingham] and Trent — and visit the clubs. Some of them we will call. Let’s see.

“We’ve just finished this camp and I think it’s important that I reach out to everyone, even to the guys we didn’t pick regularly to tell them where they are and give them honest feedback.”
