FC Barcelona beat Espanyol 2-0 on Thursday night at the RCDE stadium to become La Liga champions. Hansi Flick, in his first season in charge of the Catalan club, has managed to wrap up the domestic treble, with Real Madrid watching on.

The best team in Spain this season has walked away with all the accolades. It is only fair considering the brand of football that the German coach has got his team to play, and there have been many memorable results over the course of the season.

A chance to emerge as champions by beating Espanyol, the local rivals, is an excellent feeling, and the team has now managed to do it twice in three years. Brace yourselves for the ride as Hansi Flick is just getting started!

With all this in mind, Sempre Barca brings to you three talking points as Barcelona beat Espanyol at the RCDE stadium.

1: Campeones Campeones

36 games. 27 wins. 4 draws. 5 losses. 97 goals scored. 36 goals conceded. +61 GD. 85 points. That’s how the La Liga table stands at the time Barcelona have been crowned Spanish champions this season. Breathtaking, isn’t it?

22nd December, 2024. Barcelona vs Atletico Madrid. Hansi Flick’s team played the best football of their season but lost 2-1 to Diego Simeone’s men. They slipped to third in the La Liga table. Between that day and 16th May, 2025, the team has only dropped points in two games.

Those two were draws against Getafe and Real Betis. Barcelona have not lost a game since, and during this period, they have climbed up from 3rd to 1st. It has been a truly remarkable display of mentality and fightback from the Catalan club.

Many of the players in the current squad are being crowned La Liga champions for the first time, and some, for the second time. It has been a brilliant season for Joan Laporta & co., and they will hope this is just the start of something special.

2: Fermin gets his moment

Stoppage time against Real Madrid. Game balanced at 4-3. Fermin Lopez picks up the ball on the left flank, drives past two players, and pulls out a sublime strike to beat Thibaut Courtois at the far post. The celebrations followed, only for the goal to be chalked off for offside.

It was a shame for the Spaniard who has enjoyed a brilliant second half to the season. Despite not being a guaranteed starter, he has established himself as one of Hansi Flick’s first substitutes and seems to be ahead of Gavi in the pecking order.

However, as they say, what goes around comes around! Fermin was denied his moment in glory against Real Madrid at the Montjuic, but in stoppage time against Espanyol, the attacking midfielder got the chance to put the cherry on the cake before Barcelona became La Liga champions.

There aren’t many people who deserve that moment of glory more than Fermin Lopez, and it was a beautiful feeling to see him celebrate minutes before the crowning moment. On to bigger and better things now!

3: Lamine Yamal’s stature is increasing at a rapid rate

Lamine Yamal was already regarded as one of the biggest talents in the world before April, but in the subsequent period, he has taken the step up from that tag to now being recognized as the best player in the world.

The 17-year-old had standout displays in the two games against Inter Milan, a game-altering display against Real Madrid in a potential La Liga decider, and managed to break the deadlock in the game against Espanyol.

Lamine has now added the goal-scoring touch to his game and is seen taking more shots than he used to in the past. Against Espanyol last night, he scored one of the goals of the season, a beautiful blitz-curler into the far post.

It is frightening to think just how much better Lamine could get in the upcoming campaigns. These numbers look set to keep going North, and one can only hope injuries are kind to him and let him have a long and healthy career.
