A final push in the remaining Premier League fixtures could still see Aston Villa secure a Champions League berth, and the outcome tonight against Fulham is a welcome boost after back-to-back setbacks in the Champions League and FA Cup. Although far from impressive, Unai Emery’s men grabbed an edgy 1-0 win, thanks to Youri Tielemans’ early opener at Villa Park.
Below are the Aston Villa players rated in their 1-0 win against Fulham.
Emiliano Martinez: 7
Made some high-profile errors so far this season. But the flamboyant Argentine had little trouble against the Cottagers, who could only force him to make some routine stops.
Matty Cash: 7
Lost the majority of duels down the right, but the Polish right fullback made some crucial overlapping runs to create chances in and around the attacking third. His exquisite low cross was spurned by Ollie Watkins soon after the half-time break.
Ezri Konsa: 7.5
Dominated the duels, was no-nonsense with his clearances and made several recoveries en route to securing their first clean sheet since the Southampton game. The Three Lions star looked sharp with his ball-playing traits.
Pau Torres: 7
Struggled aerially against Raul Jimenez. Despite impressing with his passing composure, the Spanish centre-half could have done better with his movement and positioning.

Ian Maatsen: 7
Was lively down the left with his marauding runs, crosses and cut-insides. Spot-on with his tackles and recoveries before making way for Lucas Digne midway through the second half.
Boubacar Kamara: 7
Was rusty with his tackles, but the Frenchman drew some tactical fouls to break down Fulham’s counter-attacking moves. His off-the-ball work rate and awareness allowed them to keep things calm deep down the midfield.
Youri Tielemans: 8
Timed his header perfectly to beat Bernd Leno in the Cottagers’ goal. Was combative in midfield, and his ball-carrying traits often opened up space in the Fulham half. Was replaced by Ross Barkley late in the match.
John McGinn: 7.5
Set it up for Tielemans with a corner-kick from the right. Made one of the most crucial contributions of the campaign on his 200th Premier League appearance. Made way for Jacob Ramsey around the hour mark.
Morgan Rogers: 7.5
His dribbles and directness often caused menace in the visitors’ defence. Attacked the half spaces while featuring from the flank, and was seen creating chances for the forwards.
Marco Asensio: 6.5
Started as a ‘number 10’, the Spaniard often dropped deep to collect and move the ball forward. Lacked the creative spark upfront and was eventually replaced by Amadou Onana as a tactical alteration.
Ollie Watkins: 6.5
Wasted a couple of scoring opportunities while spearheading the attack. Lacked involvement in the second half and was eventually replaced by Donyell Malen midway through the second half.
Amadou Onana: 7
Was brought in to offer more physical presence and defensive cover in the middle of the park.
Jacob Ramsey: 6.5
Created a chance for Malen in the closing minutes of the match.
Donyell Malen: 7
Looked lively since replacing Watkins. Hit the woodwork moments before the final whistle.
Lucas Digne: 6.5
Added more balance down the left between defence and attack.
