FC Barcelona added another league title to their cabinet as they defeated Real Madrid last night in La Liga with a 2-0 scoreline. The Blaugranes scored both goals quite early in the game and maintained their control until the full-time whistle.
Still, it was a mixed day for the German coach Hansi Flick, who found out earlier in the day that his father had passed away. As Mundo Deportivo has reported, the Blaugrana trainer addressed a press conference after the game and revealed how he experienced all these emotions.
Flick expressed his satisfaction with the way his team has been playing lately:
“It’s the team that matters most, and how they play with one another. It’s incredible — in these last few weeks, we’ve played with much more connection. Today wasn’t easy, but we controlled the ball and defended well. I’m happy with that, and also with the atmosphere in the stadium. And with 40,000 more people, it will be incredible.”
The German coach also commented on how his team has changed over the last two years:
“A second consecutive La Liga title has even more merit. We’ve had many injuries, many things have happened, and I knew the second year would be more difficult. We’ve played at a fantastic level this season. We haven’t scored as many goals, but we’ve defended better.”
The Barcelona trainer was particularly happy to see youngsters forming a good part of his team:
“And I’m even happier when you see so many young players. Cubarsí, Eric, Pedri… although I don’t want to focus only on those three names. Today I told them it was the hardest decision I could make — choosing the starting eleven.”
Hansi Flick ensured that he feels supported by everyone at the club:
“As a coach, it’s always difficult. You have to manage players. They all want to play, and that’s normal, but it’s complicated. In the end, attitude and mentality have been crucial. At the start of the season, I spoke about egos, but I always said we could achieve the maximum. And I’ve seen it in training. I always have that positive feeling, that we always look forward and not backward. I like what I see. I have support from everyone — it’s a family.”
The German tactician also revealed how he broke the news of his father’s passing to the group:
“This morning, when my mother called me to tell me that my father had passed away, I thought: should I keep it to myself or explain it? This group is like a family, and I wanted to share it. So I told them. I will never forget everyone’s reaction. For me, they are a family. I’m very happy at this magnificent club.”
The Barcelona coach already had the objective for the next season in mind:
“That’s why I’m in the right place, and why we all want to stay here to take the next step. I know everyone wants to win the Champions League, and we will try again.”
Hansi Flick revealed that he was living a dream, winning titles with Barcelona:
“It makes me feel proud, and it shows the connection we have. I always think positively, and when you coach a club like Barça, you always have to win titles. I dreamed of this — it’s what I wanted.”
The German coach once again reiterated his gratitude for the support from the club:
“It’s incredible. I said it last season: from the very first contact with the president and with Deco, and when I arrived in the city, everyone welcomed us warmly. It’s completely different for me than before. I’m very happy about it, and I value it a lot.”
It must have been one of the most memorable days in Hansi Flick’s life, as he experienced a great loss and euphoria both on the same day. For now, he has achieved everything he could have with Barcelona this season, and hopefully, the next season will see him enjoying success and glory once again.
