Todd Cantwell has urged the EFL to make the "correct" decision following the abandonment of Blackburn Rovers vs Ipswich Town.
Todd Cantwell has urged the EFL to make the "correct" decision following the abandonment of Blackburn Rovers' clash with Ipswich Town on Saturday afternoon.
Due to an unplayable surface as a result of heavy rain in Lancashire, referee Stephen Martin made the decision to bring both sets of players off the pitch before the 80th minute. Following discussions with both club's managers - Valerien Ismael and Kieran McKenna - the abandonment of the match was confirmed.
After Jacob Greaves was sent off for Ipswich early in the second half, Rovers took the lead through Cantwell, who netted from the penalty spot.
With the rain constant, and the ball neither bouncing nor rolling during inspection, the subsequent abandonment saw Blackburn miss out on the opportunity to take three points at home for the first time this season.
With no rules set in place when it comes to match abandonment, it will now be up to the EFL's board to decide what the best course of action will be in regards to the fixture.
Goalscorer Cantwell has since taken to social media, urging the EFL to make the "correct" decision in the aftermath of the abandonment, which infers that they should be handed the three points.
Sharing the news of the match being abandoned on his Instagram story, the creative midfielder saod: "Great performance from the team, given the circumstances of the game.
"I really hope the EFL come to the correct and fair conclusion on our win!"
Bad weather was a constant theme up and down the pyramid, with National League North clashes between Southport and Peterborough Sports, and AFC Fylde and Leamington - both taking place in the North West - also being abandoned during play.
Cantwell was Rovers' most influential player on the day, operating as Ismael's creative fulcrum with 35 accurate passes and two chances created. He then won Blackburn's penalty himself in the 59th minute after being felled by Darnell Furlong, with the 27-year-old going on to convert from 12 yards.
While Blackburn will feel as if they had done enough to secure the win with only 10 minutes of normal time remaining, the decision of whether the match will be replayed remains in the hands of the EFL.
Following the early conclusion on Saturday, the EFL's statement reads: "This afternoon's Sky Bet Championship fixture between Blackburn Rovers and Ipswich Town was abandoned due to an unplayable surface. The decision was taken in agreement with both managers.
"The Board will consider what action is to be taken as a result of the abandonment, in line with EFL regulations."
The regulation coming into effect is that of 34.2, which states: "Any League match which from any cause falls whatever short of 90 minutes' duration may be ordered to count as a completed fixture or be replayed in full, or in part, on whatever terms and conditions the Board shall in their absolute discretion determine."
Cantwell seems pretty clear that the verdict should be that Blackburn get the three points having played so much of the game, especially with the one-man advantage for much of the second half, but with little precedent to go off from the past, fans will already be getting the fear that a full replay of the contest will be ordered.
While both clubs prepare for an official EFL verdict, Blackburn will begin preparations for a trip to The Valley to face Charlton Athletic on Saturday, while Ipswich turn their attentions to a home clash against Portsmouth - this current saga though remains in the balance.
