“He’s a champion; first and foremost at a human level, and, therefore, on the pitch too,” Riso told Calcio&Finanza.

“The idea was to bring Sandro to a high level; it was intriguing. It turned out to be a winning choice even after what happened afterwards [the betting ban]. Newcastle fans and the club behaved incredibly with Sandro, supporting him every time.”

The reporter asked whether Tonali is now being targeted by Premier League clubs aiming to win the title.

“Exactly, this was the target. Obviously, he’s on their target. He’s doing really well,” the midfielder’s agent replied.

“This was the target and the vision when we made the decision [to move to Newcastle]. Make Sandro become a stellar player. The most valuable Italian player.”

Tonali joined Newcastle from Milan in a deal worth over €70m in the summer of 2023.

The Italian midfielder scored one goal and provided one assist in the Azzurri’s 2-0 win over Northern Ireland in the World Cup play-off semifinal last week.

Unfortunately, the Azzurri have failed to qualify for the World Cup for the third consecutive time, losing the Final on penalties to Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Tonali has scored three goals and provided seven assists in 47 appearances with Newcastle this season.

His contract at St. James’ Park runs out in June 2028.
