Toni Martínez struck twice against Mallorca to haul Deportivo Alavés out of the relegation zone and revive their survival push.
After Virgili’s first-half fine strike put Mallorca in front, Martínez levelled, then netted a decisive second to ignite Mendizorroza and edge the visitors nearer the red zone. According to Superdeporte, his form is now Alavés’s main hope of staying up.
He left on 81 minutes with discomfort, and the club hope he will be available for the run-in.
After the match, Quique Sánchez Flores said the striker is playing many minutes and is helping the team with his goals and work.
The campaign has been turbulent, with swings between safety and peril and a late change of coach after the hierarchy had kept faith with Chacho Coudet, who chose River Plate.
Under Sánchez Flores, Martínez has remained undroppable and is producing, with six goals in his last five matches, two against Celta, one against Osasuna, one against Real Madrid and two against Mallorca.
His scoring run has attracted interest around Europe, with clubs tracking his finishing.
