Darwin Nunez Exit Sums Up Liverpool’s New Era

A Misfiring Forward and an Expensive Gamble

There aren’t many tears being shed for Darwin Nunez, whose three years at Anfield have been underwhelming. His departure to Al-Hilal in Saudi Arabia for £46.3 million represents a significant loss for Liverpool. At least on the face of it. In reality, the Nunez saga has way more significance than a mere tale of a misfiring forward.

Early Warnings and Lowered Expectations

When the 26-year-old arrived from Benfica for an initial fee of £64 million, the price suggested high expectations. Sources inside the club took a very different view. Looking back at my notes from three years ago, the conversation was like a bucket of cold water poured on the excitement that naturally comes after signing a high-priced striker.
